Unusual Silver Round... Please help identify.

Yesterday, I was at a local area coin shop to pick up a few silver bullion rounds. One that I found was very interesting - I've never seen one like it. I wanted to post photos, but I don't have any image hosting - so I'll just describe it and hopefully someone can tell me what it is.

First off, it is standard diameter, but weighs in at only 0.9 Troy ounces. It has most of the writing in hebrew, with a small section that looks arabic. It has a large songbird of some kind perched on a branch with leaves on the obverse, and some figs and fig leaves on the reverse. It has the english text "The Time of the Singing of Birds Song of Songs 2-12" on the obverse, and the text "Israel" and "The Fig Tree Putteth Forth her Green Figs Song of Songs 2-13" on the reverse along with the number "2" and the text "New Sheoalim" under the 2.

Overall, it's a very beautiful coin - despite the low weight and lack of .999 printed anywhere on the coin. It is silver, no doubts about that... just unusual.

Does anyone know what this bullion round is? Very curious...

You don't need to worry about image hosting. Take a pic, load it on to your computer. Then use the additional options area (manage attachments) below where you post a reply and upload the image.

Check over on the General Discussion board, there are a lot of guys over there that just love all things Hebrew or Israeli. :bear_wub:

Seriously, like livtocruz says, just drop the image in your computer somewhere, go to "manage attachments" and attach it.

<!--msnavigation--> The Nightingale and Fig
1996/5756
Israel's Sixth Coin in the "Holyland Wildlife" Series
"Behold, the autumn has passed, the rain has gone, blossoms are seen in the land, the time of the Nightingale has come, the voice of the turtledove is heard; the fig has formed its first fruit; the vines in blossom give forth fragrance". Song of Songs, 2, 11-13
These verses describe Springtime in the Holy Land, the end of the rains, the blossoming of the fruit and the Nightingale is about. Israel is located on the pathway of the flight of the nightingale from Europe to Africa. Especially during the spring, it is possible to hear their singing from amidst the shrubbery.

Proof: A coin which was made with special care. The coins are struck with extra pressure using polished dies. The planchets are specially selected and polished. Tallships - YES!!! That's it!
However... mine has "2" instead of 1 or 5, and has the figleaf (like the "1" coin) not the grapes. Also, I weighed it again and put my scale on Ounces instead of Troy Ounces, and it weighs exactly 1 "normal" Ounce.
Thank you!

The Hebrew writing should have been a tip-off that the round was less than a full ounce!:biggrin:

Indeed! The thought DID cross my mind after weighing it...:s1:

No need to bash the Jews... they do a pretty good job of bashing themselves!
